Nigeria, Abuja – 6 July 2026 — The 32nd anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation was celebrated on 4 July under the theme “Rwanda’s Journey Continues.” To mark the occasion, the High Commission of the Republic of Rwanda in Nigeria hosted a reception in Abuja, bringing together members of the Rwandan community, senior Nigerian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, and friends of Rwanda.

In his keynote address, Rwandan High Commissioner Ambassador Moses Rugema reflected on the deeper meaning of Liberation Day. He described it as more than a national milestone, but a celebration of resilience, unity, visionary leadership, and the power of choosing hope over despair." Liberation marked the beginning of a deliberate journey to rebuild a nation founded on unity rather than division, citizenship rather than ethnicity, accountability rather than impunity, and opportunity rather than dependence,” Ambassador Rugema said.

He highlighted Rwanda’s progress in governance, human capital development, and the pivotal role of women, while noting that the country’s greatest achievement remains the restoration of trust, reconciliation, and confidence among its citizens. Looking ahead, he stressed that regional peace and stability remain essential for Rwanda’s Vision 2050 ambitions of becoming a high-income nation driven by knowledge, innovation, and inclusive growth. On bilateral ties, the High Commissioner described the partnership with Nigeria as flourishing, supported by cooperation in aviation, education, technology, tourism, and security. He commended RwandAir as “a vital bridge” and welcomed Nigeria’s launch of a new air cargo corridor under the AfCFTA in June 2026.

On behalf of the Nigerian government, Amb. Babagana Wakil, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saluted Rwanda’s remarkable transformation, describing it as one of Africa’s most inspiring stories of renewal and hope. He affirmed the steady growth of bilateral relations rooted in solidarity and mutual respect and expressed optimism for deeper cooperation through the Joint Permanent Commission and other frameworks. 

The celebration also featured a raffle draw, with lucky winners receiving RwandAir tickets. To cap the evening, guests networked and danced to vibrant Rwandan tunes.
